Description

TCI goes through an extensive evaluation and review process by RCCP, Cornell University. April 2008 marked the release of the latest Edition of TCI Training.

The intensive five-day train-the-trainer course provides care staff with an in-house training capacity in the TCI curriculum which is an approved physical restraint training program of the Ontario government.

The purpose of TCI is to provide a crisis prevention and intervention model which will assist an organization in:

> Preventing crises from occurring
> De-escalating potential crises
> Effectively managing acute crisis phases
> Reducing potential and actual injury to children and staff
> Learning constructive ways to handle stressful situations
> Developing a learning circle within the organization

The program teaches: crisis prevention and de-escalation skills and physical intervention techniques that respect the dignity of the worker and the young person. The program will also prepare participants to conduct their own TCI training. Participants will learn; to teach TCI techniques, including how to supervise safe restraint practice sessions, how to use practice sessions and training aids in agency programs, how to handle resistance to training and to evaluate trainees' skills.

Program Outline

Day 1: Crisis as Opportunity. Crisis is defined and ways that adults can prevent a crisis situation are identified. Participants are taught how to maintain self-control in preventing or handling a crisis through awareness of personal feelings and values, the young person's needs and wants, and environmental effects on behavior.

Day 2: Triggering and Escalation. Verbal and nonverbal techniques for crisis prevention and de-escalation are presented. How to avoid crisis cycles, use protective interventions, and methods to de-escalate a potentially violent child are practiced.

Day 3: Escalation, Outburst and Recovery. Life Space Interviewing techniques are taught and methods to deescalate a potentially violent child are practiced. The rationale for safety interventions is explained and situations when restraint should and should not be used are discussed. The use of various physical intervention techniques and safety concerns are discussed and practiced.

Day 4: Outburst and Recovery. Participants practice Life Space Interviewing. Safety concerns and documentation issues are discussed. Participants have opportunities to practice the use of various physical intervention techniques.

Day 5: Implementing the TCI System. Life Space Interviewing is practiced and the elements of the TCI system are reviewed. All participants are tested for certification.

Participants have the chance to practice conducting activities to gain immediate training experience. Training techniques such as the use of role plays, small group discussions, guided fantasies; conducting practice sessions, and using audiovisual aids will be demonstrated.

Intended Audience
This course is for trainers, managers, counselors, and care workers capable of training therapeutic crisis intervention techniques. If participating in the physical intervention part of the program, participants must be capable of moderate physical activity.

Materials: Participants receive a trainer's reference and activity guide, a DVD and PowerPoint CD, and a student workbook.

Upon successful completion of the program and testing, certified TCI trainers become part of an international network of TCI trainers. This network serves to help trainers share experiences, innovations, modifications, and difficulties in implementing training programs in their respective agencies. Trainers will receive a newsletter and opportunities to attend TCI Update Training. Outcomes

Participants will be able to:

> Proactively prevent and/or de-escalate a potential crisis situation with a child or young person

> Manage a crisis situation in a therapeutic manner, and, if necessary, intervene physically in a manner that reduces the risk of harm to children and staff

> Process the crisis event with children and young people to help improve their coping strategies

> How to effectively deliver TCI training in own agency
