Description
Safeguards Training for Children and Adult Services is Co-hosting the 8th International Short Break (Respite) Association Conference and is providing this special opportunity for a more in-depth session with renowned speaker Al Condeluci. You can take this session as a stand alone training day or as the Pre Conference Institute. (If you want to learn more about the ISBA conference visit www.2012isba.net)
Al Condeluci has been an advocate and catalyst for building community capacities and understanding culture since 1970. He has emerged as an international leader and consultant on human services and community issues and written a number of excellent books on the topic. This is a highly interactive session featuring a number of modules.
1) Building a Vision for Community
A vibrant community is one that is often diverse, forward thinking and inclusive. This module will set the tone for the day by exploring our current community practices and outcomes, speculating on reasons for discrepancies, and building a vision for stronger community. We know that what makes a community more vital is when diverse people build and maintain social capital. We will explore the concept of culture and the notion of micro vs macro change.
2) Setting our own Visions
The next module will begin the vision setting for community. Participants will define and explore community and culture and look closely at how people develop and maintain strong social networks. The 4 key steps in community building will be identified and examined.
3) Steps and Stages to the Vision
Participants will then develop workgroups and begin the blueprinting process. Using a nominal process the workgroups will identify and then focus strategies and actions to building a more inclusive, welcoming community where people can develop the initial stages of social capital.
4) Reconciliation
Each group will identify a spokesperson to report on the group’s action and their plans for building an inclusive community. Each group will have a chance to learn from each others work.
5) Vision to Reality
The closing session will focus on the challenges that a new vision create, resistances to change, and opportunities that unfold. Change theory will be reviewed to promote sustainability for the new vision.
